The works chosen for this recording were written in the early nineteen-thirties, a particularly creative period in Martinu's life. He wrote about this time in a short autobiographical sketch in 1945: "To tell the truth, I am a concerto grosso type. Most textbooks only offer a superficial description of the form, except for the fact that the solo instruments alternate with the orchestra. But there is so much more to this[...].
