Pulitzer and Grammy-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens has announced that her new album Hope is the Thing with Feathers will be released September 18 on Nonesuch Records. The 10-song collection was inspired by the beauty of people coming together and drawing strength from each other. It was intentionally recorded live with no frills and few overdubs, just pure and essential music that captures the feeling of community, clarity, as well as the joy and power of creating together. From exploring the lineages that make American music to the community-oriented spirit in which it was conceived and recorded, in many ways the album tells the story of the last 20 years of Giddens’ life.  

 
Hope is the Thing with Feathers features Giddens’ key collaborators from throughout her career. Giddens (lead vocals, minstrel banjo, fiddle) is joined by longtime bassist Jason Sypher, Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi (accordion, percussion), Congolese artist Niwel Tsumbu (guitars), and Louisiana native Dirk Powell on multiple instruments, as well as her very first bandmate and fellow North Carolinian Justin Robinson (vocals, fiddle), her nephew Justin Harrington (bones), Dirk’s daughter Amelia Powell (acoustic guitar, vocals), Charly Lowry (vocals, percussion), and Giddens’ sister Lalenja Harrington.

 
Says Giddens: “Louisiana, the Congo, Italy, the Carolinas - all of these influences and people coming together to make something: that is American music. It’s how American music came to be, and that was the original thought of creating a band with the musicians that I’ve been playing with for years, and featured on this album.”   
 

On “Carolina Rain” Giddens soars over plucked banjo and fiddle runs in a song about love and money that pierces like an arrow. 
 

Giddens has a full slate of performances throughout the summer, including a special five-night presentation of concerts in which Giddens will be joined by Mavis Staples, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Hurray for the Riff Raff under open skies for a joyful celebration of American songs that connect generations.

Hole's landmark 1991 debut,?Pretty On The Inside, returns to vinyl in a new release overseen by founding guitarist Eric Erlandson. Newly remastered for vinyl, the album presents Hole's incendiary debut with enhanced fidelity while honoring the spirit of the original recording. Overseen by founding guitarist Eric Erlandson and newly remastered, this definitive reissue revisits the acclaimed 1998 album that showcased the band's growing confidence as songwriters & musicians while expanding the boundaries of it's sound. Produced by Michael Beinhorn,?Celebrity Skin?features Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf der Maur, and Patty Schemel. Certified platinum by the RIAA and nominated for three GRAMMY Awards, the album blends sharp songwriting with richly layered production across defining tracks, including "Celebrity Skin" and "Malibu," cementing it's place among the defining rock albums of the late 1990s. “Second Song” is the second studio album Neil Young has recorded with the band The Chrome Hearts, and the third album in total following the live album “As Time Explodes." “Second Song” is produced by Lou Adler and the Volume Dealers (Neil Young and Niko Bolas.) Anthony LoGerfo and Manny Adler are associate producers. 

The album features seven songs written by Young. Five are previously unreleased, and two are unreleased versions (“Casting Me Away From You” and “I Will Love You Forever”). The semi-acoustic album is musically related to earlier albums in Young’s catalog such as “Comes A Time” and "Prairie Wind”. 

Capitol/UMe will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Bob Seger's acclaimed 2006 album Face The Promise with an Expanded Edition arriving September 18.

 

The Expanded Edition features four bonus tracks—"Time," "Little Jane," "Red Eye to Memphis," and "Let Me Try"—and will also be released on 2LP black vinyl featuring a gatefold jacket and 12-page LP-sized booklet.

 

Newly remastered by longtime Seger mastering engineer Robert Vosgien, the Expanded Edition includes the hit singles "Wait for Me" and "Wreck This Heart." Among the album's highlights is "The Answer's In The Question," Seger's duet with Patty Loveless. In 2023, Seger helped induct Loveless into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The album’s songs were written by Bethel and Mouzourakis, over the tenure of their friendship, across apartments and tour vans, phone calls and late night conversations. The album’s title track (largely inspired by Springsteen’s critical narratives mistaken for bleeding heart patriotism) grapples with constant exposure to global suffering, and feeling entrenched within systems that fail us. “The Precariat” disintegrates into the ‘American cities’ outro, an idea started while the band lived in London, about missing home while watching it destabilize from afar. The Precariat faces this head on – all the sheen of the American empire has worn off, and there is much work to be done.

The Oak Ridge Boys are paying tribute to their favorite songs without losing sight of their gospel roots in a stunning and inspiring new album, Buried Treasures.

Produced by Anderson East and executive produced by Dave Cobb, Buried Treasures gathers together classic songs made popular by seminal voices such as Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole, as well as essential songs written by Billy Joe Shaver, Paul Simon, and Bill Withers. The vocal group’s spiritual side shines through on recordings of “Deep River,” “How Great Thou Art,” and “Softly and Tenderly,” yet there’s also a hint of romance in the enduring ballad, “You Are So Beautiful.” The album’s only new song, “Buried Treasure,” was written specifically for the project by Academy Award-winning songwriter Aaron Raitiere.

Across his rollicking new LP Big Jefe, Jack Blocker fully embraces the rough-edged Americana spirit that’s called to him from the start. The 27-year-old singer-songwriter muses on nights out drinking, making mistakes, and life on the road across the project’s eleven tracks. Blocker didn’t set out to make a concept album. During his first winter in Nashville, he started writing a new tune over a few pours of whiskey – one that made him chuckle and feel excited about songwriting again. My Aim Is True (49th Anniversary Edition) tells the origin story of how Declan MacManus became Elvis Costello. This expansive 5CD box set features 104 tracks, 52 of them unreleased songs, demos, outtakes, and live performances. The collection also includes a 72 page liner essay by Elvis Costello, with unseen photographs, handwritten lyrics from his notebooks, and diary entries from 1976 as he was making My Aim Is True.

IG1: "Watching The Detectives” (Good Afternoon Broadcast) 

My Aim Is True was released in July 1977. Elvis Costello made an early UK TV appearance on the Mavis Nicholson Show where he preformed an acoustic version of Watching The Detectives, a song that was not on the original release of My Aim Is True. After the single's release in October 1977, Detectives was added to the US release then all future reissues. This is a formative performance for Costello. In the liner notes he writes, "If at heart, I was still ill-at-ease in being the front man of a rock and roll band, I was perfectly happy to answer questions only designed to make me appear less like a freak. The show also gave me the time to perform two songs with solo electric guitar accompaniment, calm and focused versions of “Watching The Detectives” and “Hoover Factory” in which I had space to really put these stories across." 

 

IG2: "I Turn Around” (Hope & Anchor Studio)  

"Listening to these 1975-76 recordings, is like watching someone walk around a hat shop trying on lids and titfers; some of them didn’t suit me at all, while others could be donned as a disguise for a minute or two," says Costello in his liner notes.  The Blue Print (CD2 of the box set) captures the era of Elvis figuring out who he is going to become. The previously unreleased song "I Turn Around" is from a single solo session at Hope & Anchor Studio in very early ’76. It was recorded by Dave Robinson—the future co-founder of Stiff Records. It one of 52 previously Unreleased songs, demos, outtakes and live performances on the My Aim Is True box set.  

 

Release Focus Track: "Love Is Gone” (Live - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA - November 8, 2007)  

Elvis Costello recorded my Aim Is True with the US country rock band, Clover as his backing band. Elvis never performed with Clover. Soon he assembled The Attractions as his touring and recording band. On a November night in 2007, Elvis Costello and the members of Clover performed My Aim Is True together at one-off concert in San Francisco. This 21 song concert has never been released and has been mixed from the multis by Sebastian Krys. Elvis says, "There was even time for, “Love Is Gone”, the Alex Call song, I had first heard Nick Lowe play with Brinsley Schwarz, not long before he wrote,“(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love & Unders- tanding” which seemed like the perfect number to close the show." "Love Is Gone" originally appeared on Clover's 1971 released.

Ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness and she'll warn you: “Happiness fucks you.” It's a lesson that's been writ large into her gritty, outsider songwriting for years, but never so powerfully as on her 2016 album, Puberty 2. “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one's almost more destructive than the other,” she says. “When you realize you can't have one without the other, it's possible to spend periods of happiness just waiting for that other wave.” On Puberty 2, that tension is palpable: a beautiful and brutal romantic hinterland, in which one of modern music’s defining voices came fully into focus.
